JOIN US AT 6PM ON DECEMBER 8, 2007 FOR THE OFFICIAL LIGHTING OF CANADA’S TALLEST CHRISTMAS TREE, DEDICATED TO CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD
Here is some information regarding our 2006 event, where Canada’s Tallest Christmas Tree Lit Up the Skies.
Canada’s tallest outdoor Christmas tree was decorated by over 3000 local school children as they competed for the honour of turning on the lights at the official Lighting Ceremony held at 6:00 PM on Saturday December 9 in Cobden, Ontario. As a follow-up to Canada’s Tallest Christmas Tree in 2005, this past year’s tree was once again transported and placed in the ground at Logos Land Resort. The Christmas Tree organizing committee, made up of representatives from the County of Renfrew, Logos Land Resort, and MYFM Radio dedicated the 2006 Christmas Tree to the brave men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces and their families.
The CTV Network’s Ottawa affiliate, CTV Ottawa, carried the official lighting ceremony to CFB Kandahar, where Canadian soldiers were able to watch the dedication and lighting of the Christmas tree. The Christmas tree was lit with 3000 LED light bulbs donated by Hydro One. The County of Renfrew held a decoration contest, and two children had the honour of lighting Canada’s Tallest Christmas Tree. Many of the homemade decorations were created by children from the CFB Petawawa Base area, and many of them had parents stationed in Afghanistan and other missions around the world. Some spectators came to catch a glimpse of Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, who also attended the event to light the tree.
Organizing Coordinator Bruce McIntyre encouraged people to arrive early. “The music began at 5:00 PM, and the tree was lit at exactly 6:10 PM. The grassroots community support for this project was overwhelming. Our committee invited every Canadian, young and old, to come out and show their support not only for the men and women of the Armed Forces, but just as importantly, for their family members. This was a chance for all Canadians to show the whole world that we are proud of our troops and we support them. It was our hope that Canada’s tallest Christmas Tree would unite our country and show our troops that Canadians stood behind them.”
The Renfrew Home Hardware and the Cobden Home Hardware supplied materials to build a stage for the event. Hydro One donated 13,000 LED lights for the tree. Federal Express sponsored the school buses that transported the children. FedEx was also on-site on December 5th and 6th to collect the letters children wrote for our troops deployed overseas.
Logos Land Resort is located 1-hour west of Ottawa on Trans-Canada Highway 17 between the Town of Renfrew and the City of Pembroke. In addition to the Christmas Tree, an Olympic-sized skating rink was built on December 10 and offered free public skating throughout the winter. Following the official lighting ceremony, Canada’s Tallest Christmas Tree had lit up the skies from 5:30 PM until 11:00 PM every night until January 2, 2007.
Logos Land also had featured a Christmas Forest. Atomic Energy Canada Limited (AECL) sponsored this celebration of Christmas. The 30-acre forest was it up with LED lights and had a train ride through the forest containing various scenes and mini-theatre groups depicting such themes as “2000 Years Ago: Christmas in Bethlehem,” “Christmas Around the World” and other displays all in celebration of the Christmas season and the international community.
This year's event promises to be just as spectacular.
Don't miss Logos Land Resort's 3rd Annual official tree lighting ceremony, taking place on December 8, 2007 at 6:00pm. We encourage everyone to arrive by 5pm in order to take in all of the festivities
